Social action Roadshow!
The summer is just around the corner, and the movement
is gearing up to what is going to be an incredible
couple of months!
The success of the first ever Roadshow last summer, made
a massive impact on the movement. It provided the
members of the movement to be inspired and engaged in
issues that are relevant to them. Last year the
roadshow focused on the rejuvenation of the smaller
Jewish communities, this year, we have turned to various
themes of Social action.
Being a socialist movement, we are always looking for
ways to introduce the concept of socialism to the
movement in a relevant and engaging manner. The idea of
social action and social activism has become
particularly relevant to our madrichim and chanichim,
with many becoming involved in several campaigns
supporting issues such as Darfur and making poverty
history.
The Roadshow will embark on their journey at the start
of August. 13 madrichim, 1 rosh and two Rakazim will
descend on the city of London to enjoy a week of social
action, education and of course, fun! They will be
educated on ethical consumerism by members of the JCC,
will take part in a World Jewish Relief packathon, 2
volunteering projects on behalf of the Jewish Volunteers
Network, a Fairtrade Mission- canvassing around Jewish
Deli’s and shops, as well as enjoying all aspects of
London society! In between all of these activities, the
tsevet will be planning the activities that they intend
to run on our UK machanot the week later. During the
second week, the tsevet will tour around the UK machanot
in their mini-buses where they will run a day’s
activities for the chanichim on camp. All these
activities will relate to the theme of social action,
and will have relevance to the information they gathered
in the first week. Sounds pretty jam-packed hey?!
Towards the end of their time on the roadshow, the
tsevet will be planning and executing an event that will
aim to attract Jewish, Muslim and Christian youth in a
central location in Manchester. With the aim of
co-existence, the tsevet will be planning an event that
seeks to explore the similarities and differences
between kids from all different backgrounds and
Religions. We hope this event can establish links in the
community that we will be able to value for many years
to come.
The Roadshow will hopefully be an inspiring and engaging
two weeks for everyone involved. It is a real chance to
show that Habonim Dror UK can really be an example to
the rest of the Jewish community.
We wish the Roadshow the best
of luck! B’hatslacha!
