In 1929, the Habonim
movement was founded by Wellesley Aron
(1900-1987). On the 8th of September
2009 over 500 people gathered in the
gardens of Ramat Efal in Tel Aviv to
celebrate Habonim’s 80th birthday,
paying tribute to the legacy that
Wellesley left behind. Attending the
celebrations were Habonim members
representing the past, present and
future of the movement. This included
Kibbutzniks from all over Israel who
made alliyah from 1946 onwards to found
Kibbutzim such as Kfar Blum, Kfar
Hannasi and Bet Haemek, to name but a
few. The members of Kvutzat Yovel
represented the present-day Kibbutz
movement, now known as the Irbutz
movement (Urban Kibbutz). Proudly
representing the current movement and
the future of Habonim Dror were the
shnatties, accompanied by the new
Movement Work tsevet and several of the
Bogrim.
After an
outdoor reception, the event itself
consisted of several performances and
speeches, including the British
Ambassador Tom Phillips who spoke of his
honour at being invited to the event.
The grandson of Wellesley Aron, the
superstar David Broza, put on a unique
performance and also spoke of his pride
at being part of the celebrations. In
his speech, newly appointed Mazkir Sam
Greene informed the crowd of Habonim
Dror’s recent activites, stating that
‘Habonim Dror today continues to run its
activities based on the platforms of
Socialism, Zionism and Cultural
Judaism.’ Attending such an event was a
reminder of the rich history of Habonim
and it was a proud day for all involved.
HDUK’s 80th birthday
