Yom Yerushalayim
Habonim Dror movement worker Anthony Steen and Schaliach Yahal Porat have been on a Yom Yerushalayim tour around schools in Manchester in Leeds since last Friday. The pair have been running the assemblies as part of the inter movement programme of educating children in schools about Yom Yerushalayim as it is the 40th anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem this week.
The pair went to Manchester Grammar School last Friday and this week went to Bury Grammar for boys and Allerton High School in Leeds. The assembly was to raise awareness of the day and the boys ran a fun quiz about Jerusalem that all participants enjoyed as well as learning facts not known before.
The assemblies highlight Habonim Drors commitment to educating the Manchester community as well as taking part in cross-communal activities. Habonim Dror have taken active leading roles in the Yom Ha’Atzmaut celebrations, community telethons, chaggim to name a few and this event was no different.
Anthony Steen commented, “We are one of the biggest youth movements in the north and we take pride in being active in the community. Habonim Dror is an important part of the community and it is important not just to get large numbers on camp but to give back as well. If there is any way we can help the northern communities we will always give our full support.”
Habonim Dror Schaliach Yahal thinks an important part of is role is to educate youngsters around the country about Israel. “When I came here one of my main objectives is to educate as many people as possible about the country I love and am proud of. This opportunity was fantastic for the movement, but for myself personally.”
