Habo Summer Camps are a Roaring Success!
Habonim Dror summer camps ended this week and organisers are very pleased with the way the summer turned out for the just under 500 participants. Over 350 were involved this summer from Manchester with the rest coming from Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London and Oxford.
Habonim Dror runs five different summer camps not including Machaneh Israel (Israel camp) for 16 year olds where there was a strong group of 81 participants.
The camp for 9-11year olds looks at social action and changing the world and had a huge increase from last year showing the increasing popularity of summer camps. 12 year olds went to the Midlands to learn about Revolutions and sisters from Liverpool Sisters Ella and Hadas Farage spoke about their experiences on the same camp this summer. Hadas commented, “I enjoyed the camp lots and I made lots of friends from all over the country. I will definitely go on camp next year.” Ella echoed the words of her sister and said, “The camp was really good and I will be going next year. I learnt about fair trade and the leaders were really fantastic.”
Thirteen year olds went to Wales for the Judaism Machaneh and head of camp and current movement worker Daniel Conn commented, “The camp is going really well. The kids are learning more about Judaism and especially the festivals within the faith, which we have been celebrating on camp.” 14 year olds went off to Ireland for the Zionism Machaneh and Beth Oppenheim, 14 from London, said, “ I had great fun and made lots of new friends from all over the country. I learnt a lot I did not know about Zionism and I am really looking forward to being on winter camp.”
The fifteen year olds went to Holland for Habonim Dror’s renouned Machaneh about the Shoah. Here the attendees are taught about the rise of anti-semitism, the genocide and lessons that should be learnt from the Holocaust. Machaneh Israel had more people than last year and once proved that the programme was above the competition, by having a great balance of education and fun they visited sights that other groups do not.
Outgoing camps organiser Gary Sakol commented, “The first great thing was that the numbers were up this year and we hope to see our figures increasing. The second great thing was that numbers of people from smaller Jewish communities is going up and as a Glasgow boy it pleases me to see people take the same opportunities I had as a kid.”
