A Habo Summer Is A Socially Active Summer!
Habonim Dror has continued to be the leading socially active movement this summer with a big drive for Darfur education on all the summer camps. Habonim Dror have almost 500 people attending Habonim Dror activities this summer and want to use this opportunity to educate the members about the government backed genocide in Sudan.
Whilst preparing for camp Darfuri refugees, who spoke to the leaders about the genocide and their personal stories of family being killed and how they fled the country, visited all the leaders. Furthermore, the kids that attend Habonim Dror activities this summer will have activities run for them to make them aware of the situation and what they can do to help. Natasha Abrahamson, next years social action worker and head of Holland camp this summer, commented, “Habonim Dror and the Jewish people have a responsibility to not only educate about the atrocities, but to get people to stand up and do something about it.
Habonim Dror has not just been involved with Darfur social action this summer. 40 people joined forces with World Jewish Relief so support the Gifts in Kind (GiK) Programme and gain a deeper understanding of the Jewish communities WJR support. In total the volunteers packed 57 boxes, which is enough to provide 5000 people with new clothes or a toy for their children. Charlotte Casselson, Outreach Co-ordinator for WJR, commented, “We are extremely grateful to Habonim for taking the time to help us pack up the goods – not only is it hugely useful to us in terms of man power, but we think it is important for young people particularly to feel connected to Jewish communities abroad and realise that we are all responsible for one another.”
The day after the help with WJR, the forty leaders had random acts of kindness day, when they gave flowers and cookies to people on the street to brighten up their day. Habonim Dror has plans to have regular social action throughout the year, for more information to see what’s going on in your area visit www.habodror.org.uk.
