GLOBE FOR DARFUR- TAKE OFF YOUR BLINDFOLDS
On Sunday September 16th, countries all over the Globe took part in GLOBE FOR DARFUR- campaigning to end the genocide in Darfur which has been going on for over four years.
The theme of the day was blindfolds with the tagline being: DARFUR: Don’t Look Away Now. Help us remove the blindfolds of the UN General Assembly this September.
Habonim Dror UK attended the Globe For Darfur rally in London where protestors gathered at the Sudanese Embassy, marched together to 10 Downing Street and created a rally campaigning to end the genocide outside 10 Downing Street. With chants of ‘Peace and Justice For Darfur’ and ‘Peace, peace for Darfur’ ringing loud and clear in everybody’s ears, our voices were most definitely heard.
HDUK was very proud to have over 100 members of the Movement present at the rally. Two buses came down from Manchester in the wee hours of Sunday morning filled with passionate and inspirational activists. An ocean of blue shirts was visible for all to see and a feeling of pride to be part of such a caring and active movement resonated strongly amongst Habonim Members.
As part of a youth movement which led the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in the Holocaust, we feel that it is up to us to SPEAK OUT against genocide and to call on our pioneering spirit to ACT and stop genocide from happening right now.
A huge thank you to Cassie Matus, Sara Warner, Joe Ailion, Dave Lewis and Abby Joe- Sheldon for their amazing team work and special thanks goes out to Kvutzah Azut for organizing and promoting the rally. Finally, a HUGE Heyach Heydad to every single person who attended the rally. It was so inspiring to be part of such an active and caring group of young people and it just goes to show how much more we can achieve when we work together!!
This marks the beginning of a year of inspirational activism by HDUK with plans for parents’ evenings educating about Darfur, a day of cultural exchange between the Darfuri and Jewish communities in London on November 18th, campus campaigning and be-friending projects with Darfuri asylum seekers and refugees living in England, all due to take place.
