Habo Continue Darfur Support
Last Sunday over fifteen members from Habonim Dror Travelled across country to participate in the Globe for Darfur protest in Whitehall, London. Members of the movement travelled from Glasgow, Manchester, Leeds, Nottingham and London to call for Britain to act on the Genocide taking place in Sudan and not turn its head away. This protest came on the 4th anniversary of the atrocities beginning where over 200,000 people have been slaughtered.
Habonim Dror pledged to make this issue a priority and are throwing the resources of
the movement behind the campaign. Sam Greene from Manchester commented, “I was surprised and encouraged from the turnout of the rally and I thought that Jews were well represented.” Sara Warner from Manchester said, “the hourglass that represented that time was up was very symbolic and touched a nerve in many people.”
Habonim Dror have organised many Darfur events and have more lined up for the future. Events so far have been the Leadership weekend where Habonim Dror learnt about Darfur and wrote activities for summer camp, the pesach seder where Darfur was discussed and Habonim Dror members travelling to London for the Rally. Social Action worker Anthony Steen commented, “Habonim Dror have made this a real focus, we are going to have our returning shnat group make this one of their projects for the year and soon we will be hosting an event for the whole community which will include a survivor of the atrocities. As Jews we have to stand up, take notice and make a difference and I encourage the whole community to make their voices heard, Never Again.”
