Last weekend almost thirty madrachim from Habonim Dror went on a training weekend to train leaders for weekly meetings and summer camp. The weekend was designed to train leaders on activity writing and the theme was the current Genocide in Darfur.
The leaders had to read information on the genocide and then write activities, which will be run this summer on Habonim Dror camps. After the weekend many leaders contacted the office workers saying they wanted to run events to raise awareness on the situation in Darfur. There are going to be fundraising events, petitioning in Manchester city centre, letter writing campaigns and Habonim Dror are hoping to have a Darfur survivor come and speak to the community. Many of the leaders were shocked to learn about the situation and that it had been going on for so long without their knowledge. Alicia Fagelman said, “I had no idea and what is going on is a genocide, just like Rwanda or the Holocaust. I really want to let as many people know about the situation as possible.” Sara Warner founder of the Social Action Club commented, “As Jews we have a responsibility to help others that are in a terrible situation. Many of us ask the question why did the world let the Holocaust happen? We cannot stand idly by when another genocide is taking place.” Social Action Worker Anthony Steen said, “To see the leaders have so much passion is more than we could have hoped for from the weekend. The leaders have formed this club and we hope to make a big impact on the Jewish and non-Jewish community. Habonim Dror as a socialist movement is at the forefront of social action in the UK and we hope this can campaign will be a huge success.” If you are in year 11 or above and would like to be part of Social Action Club, please e-mail steeno@habodror.org.uk.
