Parashat Shemot - Article added 13/01/2012

The parasha this week engenders notions of leadership and inner strength and strife. During this period in the torah, the children of Israel are multiplying rapidly in Egypt. Pharaoh is threatened by their growing numbers and thus enslaves them; simultaneously ordering Hebrew midwives to kill all male babies at birth. When they do not comply he commands his people to cast the Hebrew babies into the Nile.

Hanukkah, the festival of lights as it is commonly known (although the literal translation means dedication not lights), commemorates two extraneous events. The defeat of a superior Greek army by the miniscule Jewish maccabees and also the miracle of one drop of oil lasting eight days.
