The Mazkirut...
At Veida Dor Haba’ah (Next Generation) the movement voted to restructure itself to allow greater bogrim, madrichim and chanichim involvement all year round. So far it has been a massive success as you can see for yourself on the website with reports on all the diverse activities in the different cities that have been taking place in 2005. In a very exciting move we also voted in our first ever written constitution which will help us be more democratic and better structured. One of the newest innovations that is in the constitution that has been quietly going on but not reported is the Mazkirut. Well it will remain quiet no longer. The Mazkirut is very important to a socialist movement such as Habo and so here are the facts and all you need to know about the Mazkirut.
What is the Mazkirut?
First and foremost let’s answer the obvious question. The Mazkirut is a decision making body and is officially known as the Executive Committee. Its main responsibility is to meet several times throughout the year to discuss various issues from choosing the Ovdei Tnua (movement workers) to ensuring that Veida resolutions are carried out. The members of the Mazkirut are to monitor the work of the Ovdei Tnua (movement workers) and pursue various disciplinary matters that crop up throughout the year.
Who is on the Mazkirut?
A fair question. As well as the Ovdei Tnua and the Shaliach (Yonatan for those who do not know) there is a member of each shichva from Lomdim (year 12) to Dinosaurim (age 22+).
So this year’s honorary list is:
- Georgie Davis (Lomdim)
- Aaron Showman (Muchanim)
- Adam Sivner (Shnatties)
- Deborah Brown (Barbarim)
- Rio Sherman (Barvazim)
- Yaniv Cohen (Avazim)
- Anthony Steen (Dinosaurim)
Are these people on the Mazkirut forever and how can I be on it?
The Mazkirut changes each year. However, to ensure continuity there are a couple of shichvot who retain their representative. For instance Georgie and Deborah will both sit for another year on the Mazkirut. Everyone else will change. During Chalutz there is Yom Tnua (movement day) during which new people will be voted onto the Mazkirut.
Did you say ‘voted’?
Yes I did. As a democratic movement it is a fair way to decide who gets the position if more than 1 person wants to do it. So we have a vote whereby each person from the shichva can register a vote for their chosen representative.
So what have the Mazkirut done so far?
Well, since January we have sat twice with the Mazkir setting an agenda that people can contribute to in the build up to the meeting. We have voted in the new Ovdei Tnua, affiliated ourselves to Make Poverty History as well as various other things that can be seen on the minutes of the meetings.
It all sounds a bit secret to me, a small select committee tucked away in North Manchester or London making big decisions…
How do I know you’re not ruining my movement?
Fair point. Anyone is welcome to a Mazkirut meeting, not just those voted onto the Mazkirut. You should all come to the Mazkirut, voice your opinions, eat the chocolate and drink the coffee. The only difference is that not everyone can vote during a meeting. Only those elected and the Ovdei Tnua can vote. It is up to the members of the Mazkirut to advertise that there will be a Mazkirut meeting to the rest of their Shichva. We will put it up on the website and make sure people know about it.
How does my shichva representative know how I want her/ him to represent me?
As stated it is up to the members of the Mazkirut to advertise an upcoming meeting. It is then evreyone’s responsibility (yours included) to get hold of your representative and tell them what you want discussed. They need to know what their shichva feels on certain issues and that is not possible unless you tell them. Also, come to the meeting.
That’s about it...
So there you have it. The Mazkirut, the Executive Committee of Habonim Dror UK. This committee is here to serve you. It is here to ensure that Veida resolutions are carried out, that the Ovdei Tnua are doing their jobs well and that the entire madrichim movement is represented. In short the Mazkirut is responsible for the direction of the movement. If you want to be on it, volunteer yourself on Yom Tnua and get people voting for you. If you want to be involved and have your say come to the next meeting or at least talk to your shichva representative. This is democracy and you should all be a part of it.
