Nb. The majority of these idea's have come from the book 'Change the World for a Fiver: We are what we do' published by 'Short Books, London'. For more details please click here. Day 1 - The 500 Year Shopping Trip Hi Guys, We have three requests; please take part in our daily tasks, which will not take long. Imagine everyone in Habo doing these things at the same time, it is very exciting and a great message for our movement that prides itself on social action. Day 1 - The 500 Year Shopping Trip Every person in the country uses an average of 134 plastic bags a year; that is 8 billion bags a year in the UK alone.
A plastic bag can take up to 500 years to decay in Landfill.
Buy a shopping bag, which you can use for the rest of your life or recycle your plastic bags.

Day 2 - Change a Light bulbAn energy saving bulb might seem expensive, but it could save you £65 in your lifetime. It might also save something else...... The Planet. Change your lightbulbs today
To view the replies we have had for Day 2 click here. Day 3 - Learn First Aid Morning all,
Day 3 - Learn First AidIt only takes 2 hours to learn how to save a persons life, what else will you do in that time? Watch TV? Saving someone's life is possibly the greatest thing in the world and statistically you are more likely to have to deal with an ill friend or relative than a stranger. Saving Lives, Think about it. For more information go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/first_aid_action/
Click here to see photos of Habonim Dror Madrichim (Leaders) actualising this days social action, by learning first aid for Machaneh Choref (Winter Camp!)
To view the replies we have had for Day 3 click here. Day 4 - Smile!Hi Guys We are really excited to have been contacted, but we are getting about 20 replies a day from about 1000 people. Let us know what you think, are you doing the actions, if not why not. Make our day!!! Shabbat Shalom The Habonim Dror Movement Workers P.S If you are in manchester this sunday at 11am until 1pm Habo and other movements are going to Rainsough Cemetery to clean it up for the community. Call Steeno 0161 795 9447. We would love to see you come x P.P.S If you receive this twice sorry, having problems with the internet and not sure what sent or not xx Day 4 - Smile At the end of a stressful week this next action is really easy and will make you and others happy. It may not seem like social action, but making someones day is really lovely in the rushed society we live in today. And remember it takes half as many muscles to smile as it does to frown!
To view the replies we have had for Day 4 click here. Day 5 - Take Public TransportDay 5 - Take public transport I know this may be the worst idea in the world for some of you, but I urge you to take public transport once this month where you would usually have driven.
A double-decker bus carries the same number of people as 40 cars, and it is going that way anyway.
To view the replies we have had for Day 5 click here. Day 6 - Don't SpeedGood morning one and all, I hope everyone had a lovely and meaningful Shabbat and that you saw good fireworks last night (if that's your thing!). This action is especially relevant when thinking about the morning rush for bagels! Thanks to all for the feedback on Friday, good responses and there is some great work being done. Remember this is not a one way dialogue, already had many great suggestions for more days, so thank you one and all. Look forward to hearing from you. The Habonim Dror Movement Workers
Day 6 - Don't SpeedIt is easy to ignore speed limits, especially when we are in a rush, but is it worth it? Is it worth risking a life? At 35 mph you are twice as likely to kill someone than at 30 mph. For at least one day, please don't speed
To view the replies we have had for Day 6 click here. Day 7 - Go For a Walk With a Friend Good Morning one and all,
Day 7 - Go for a walk with a friendAt the moment in the developed world obesity is a massive problem so today we are going to try some exercise, we are going to go for a walk.
Grab a mate or someone you do not talk to enough and go and have a 30-minute walk. E-mail any interesting things you saw on your walk.
To view the replies we have had for Day 7 click here. Day 8 - Turn Your Appliances Off at the Wall Morning all Day 8 - Turn your appliances off at the wall Virtual exercise: hand up if you put things on standby (my hand is up). Did you know that if you have a video recorder on standby it uses as much energy as playing one tape. Switching that green light to red does little apart from costing you money and wasting energy. Back to basics today, switch off all appliances at the wall when you have finished with them
To view the replies we have had for Day 8 click here. Day 9 - Recycle Your Mobile PhoneHello all Have a great day guys
Day 9 - Recycle your mobile phone
Mobile phones are fantastic, you get all the latest stuff, enjoy it and when you get a new one you put the old one in the drawer "just in case" Did you know that every year 15 million mobile phones are replaced in the UK, equating to 1500 tonnes of landfill (about the same as burying a WW2 destroyer). So today if you have an old phone that you wont use and is gathering dust go to www.fonebank.org or drop it into your nearest phone dealer.
To view the replies we have had for Day 9 click here. Day 10 - Register as an Organ Donor Good Afternoon,
Day 10 - Register as an organ donor90% of us support organ donation in principle, but only 18% have joined the organ donation register. You can save lives all over the world for all types of people and you don't even have to move! Organ donation gives people hope and gives people a better chance than they were given. Today we are cheating; we are doing 2 things: 1. Tell your next of kin about your wishes, because even if you want to donate, it is the next of kin that gives the go-ahead. 2.Register online www.uktransplant.org.uk
To view the replies we have had for Day 10 click here. Day 11 - Give Money to Charity Morning all, Day 11 - Give money to charityOk amigos, I am not talking about hefty donations (although that would be great) here I am talking about loose change in your pocket, or change from your 99p magazine. Did you know that 1p per person per week adds up to £30 million a year, and that only costs you 52p. When you are in a shop and get change look for a charity box and give money. Gavin Presman and Inspire Training are happy to have sponsored this task Inspire Training is always looking for companies who want to make a difference to their people, or people who want to make a difference to their companies. If your company needs to help its people communicate more effectively then we could help. If you are also a ex-madrich who may want to use your skills in a business environment, then we also may be able to use you as a consultant. Contact Gavin Presman at gavin@inspiretraining.com

Day 12 - Be Friendly in another languageToday we are back to the classroom because we are going to learn some phrases in other languages so we can be friendly to others, which will create genuine warmth.
The Ideas for these tasks Have Come from "Save the world for a fiver"
To view the replies we have had for Day 12 click here. Day 13 - Have a Meal Together Hello!! Secondly go to http://www.habodror.org.uk it has loads of information on all kinds of stuff, and if you want to read some of the responses from social action month they are all under the social action section. Day 13 - Have a meal togetherA nice one today, we are going to have a meal together. Research has shown that a meal with parents as kids means they are less likely to suffer from anxiety or stress. So lets chat to each other, tonight you are going to have dinner sat down, no telly, with parents, grandparents, relatives, friends, or if you want a complete stranger. Take the weight off your mind
Action adapted from "Change the world for a fiver"
To view the replies we have had for Day 13 click here. Day 14 - Bin the Gum Good Day to you all Day 14 - Bin the gumIn the UK we spend a staggering £150 million a year cleaning gum off the streets. Why clean it I hear you ask, well because if not we would all be stuck to the ground! Just a quick fact with the £150 million we could build 3 hospitals or pay for 8500 teachers. Don't throw your gum on the ground. Bin it. This action is adapted from "Change the world for a fiver"
To view the replies we have had for Day 14 click here. Day 15 - Use Mugs, Not Plastic Cups Morning friends, Day 15 - Use Mugs, not plastic cups Each year from vending machines and other sources in the UK we go through 6 billion polystyrene cups. Today we are going to buy a mug or a cup that you will carry round with you in the future to drink from. One added benefit apart from saving the world is that it will taste better and you will get more drink because the cup will be bigger. Action adapted from "Change the world for a fiver"
To view the replies we have had for Day 15 click here. Day 16 - Give Blood Hello everyone, Lastly pay a visit to www.cheshvan.org go to activities and then youth groups and you can see what Habonim Dror and other organisations are doing all over the world. Thanks everyone and have a lovely day Day 16 - Give BloodThis is a hard one for some people like me who scream like a little baby when they see a needle, especially when they don't put it in right and have to reinsert! Good now I have your attention you have been brave enough not to delete my message. Give blood it is a simple as that. Go to the following websites to see where you can donate:

To view the replies we have had for Day 16 click here. Day 17 - Reverse Haggling Morning all, Day 17 - Reverse HagglingThis is a funny one and one that will make someone's day. Go to a charity shop and find something you want, it is not hard, charity shops have great stuff, clothes, DVD's, computer games, board games, videos and other cool stuff which are good quality and cheap. Then reverse haggle e.g. if it is 50p offer a pound the person will go but its only and then you go "you drive a hard bargain £2" and continue until you are done. Let me know how you get on, the biggest percentage above the original price gets a great prize (it wont be a Habo pen!), you need proof of purchase!
To view the replies we have had for Day 17 click here. Day 18 - Save the World in Two MinutesHello Everybody, Today we are getting three actions because the hard drive on my computer died and will not have access to a comp over the weekend. If you get the e-mail more than once or get this and asked not to, then accept our apology, we are working off an older version of the list as the current one is on the old comp. Let us know of any problems and we should have everything fixed by Monday. We did not receive any e-mails about reverse haggling, which is so disappointing as it is great fun. I bought the "Stars of the world cup 1990" i will not tell you the mark up in case anyone does this task over the weekend. Do it and have fun, the guy could not believe it!! Remember to visit us on www.habodror.org.uk and keep those phones coming. The deadline for Blue Peter show is soon and we need to have collected lots more. After the Blue Peter appeal keep them coming as we will still run the project. Have a lovely Shabbat and weekend The Habonim Dror Movement Workers xx
Day 18 - Save the world in 2 minutes
I Guarantee that 90% of you leave the water running when you brush your teeth. This wastes up to 9 litres of water a minute or 26,000 litres per family per year. This means that your street alone could fill an Olympic size swimming pool.
This is like having the toilet flush, the whole time you are on the loo.
Easy one: turn the tap off when you brush your teeth.
To view the replies we have had for Day 18 click here. Day 19 - Give Away Some Great Ideas
Day 19 - Give away some great ideas
I know that my mum has thousands of books on bookshelves that she has probably not looked at in about 10 years. My point?
In Amsterdam a few years ago they had a scheme that you could take a bike and ride it and leave it somewhere for others to use it. It was a great idea but kinda failed cause they all got nicked.
So what are we chatting about, we are going to recycle books, if you are done with a book, don’t just keep it cause you paid for it. If you will not look at it again take the book to your charity shop, library or leave it on a bus, train, bench, give it to someone, you see where we are going with this.
Recycle books.

Day 20 - Buy Fair-trade productsFair trade products guarantee to give the people that make the products a fair share of the profits for more information on everything you need to know about fair-trade go to http://www.fairtrade.org.uk/.
Make a special effort to make a difference today and let us know what you got.
All todays actions are adapted from "Change the world for a fiver"
To view the replies we have had for Day 20 click here. Day 21 - Kettle FillingHappy Monday morning everyone!!
Apologies to everyone that is still getting the e-mails after requesting to be taken off the list, the hard drive crashed on the computer and we are working off an old list, hopefully we will fix the problem by tomorrow.
So another day and still no working computer, but that does not mean that you can neglect to e-mail us. The feedback has gone down, so get back on it, this is the final push! e-mail steeno@habodror.org.uk with all comments.
A quick update, we have now collected over 70 mobile phones so we need a final push for the Blue Peter campaign. We need all phones to be sent to us for Thursday morning for recycling as the crew are planning to film on Thursday afternoon. Please send us your old phones to 523 Finchley Road, London, NW3 7BD as soon as possible. Thank you to everyone that has contributed so far :).
A quick add on to the leave your book for someone else action. Go to www.bookcrossing.com to find book people have left and to inform others as to the whereabouts of your novel!
Lastly go to our website www.habodror.org.uk and look at the social action message board.
Have a great day and look forward to hearing from you

To view the replies we have had for Day 21 click here. Day 22 - Plant a TreeGood afternoon social action gurus,
We hope you are having a lovely day. Firstly thank you to all that replied to the e-mails yesterday, please keep them coming, without your feedback we do not know if the stuff we are sending is useful, inspiring, boring etc.
The list is hopefully back to normal, but please let us know if you are receiving duplicates or if you requested to be taken off the list. If there are any mix ups allow us to apologise, computer problems are the reason for this.
A shout out to you all, we are in need of your old mobile phones for recycling. We need the phones by Thursday and should be sent to Habonim Dror, 523 Finchley Rd, London, NW3 7BD. A big thanks to you all in advance!!
Check out the new social action message board on the website www.habodror.org.uk under message boards. We have started a discussion board about organ donation, so feel free to peruse and contribute to the section. You are free to start any new boards so enjoy and look forward to hearing from you. Have a great dayThe Habonim Dror Movement Workers Day 22 - Plant a tree
Go to your local garden centre (mine is Rouken Glen, what's yours?) and buy a packet of seeds for a tree, shouldn't cost you more than a quid. Why?
Trees are amazing things, they like stuff they don't like, like carbon dioxide. And produce stuff we do like, like oxygen. But we cut down 33 football pitches of trees every minute worldwide.
Each tree will provide enough oxygen for 2 people to breath for their whole life.
Do a worthwhile thing, Today. Action adapted from "Change the world for a fiver"
To view the replies we have had for Day 22 click here. Day 23 - RecycleMorning all,
Although we are receiving some feedback from you all it is definitely not enough and we are not sure what to do. Do you want this to end, because there is no point wasting our time writing these e-mails if we get no feedback, positive or negative. So for the last few days of the month can we please rally and really make an effort to make a difference.
Our message board is starting to spring to life, please visit www.habodror.org.uk and visit the social action section in our message board section. You are free to reply and start any new conversations you like, so enjoy!!
Quick update on the Blue Peter gig; We are on the show this Monday live at 5, basically there are going to be a couple of Habo kids helping the guest star unload mobile phones and old coins. Although we are on the show it does not mean that we are stopping to collect mobile phones, so keep them coming.
For those that are interested about whats going on in Israel from a Habo perspective please visit http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/645882.html. The article is really good and inspirational so enjoy.
We look forward to hearing from you guys
The Habonim Dror Movement Workers
Day 23 - RecycleOk this one is two-tiered so bear with us. Firstly keep paper, glass and plastic bottles and take them to your local recycling depot. Most supermarkets have them, but if you want to find out call your local council.
Secondly call your local council to see what recycling projects they do, for example in Crumpsall we called the council and they deliver a green bag for paper and black box for bottles etc. They then collect it twice a month and we don’t even have to leave the house, Brucey Bonus.
Do the same, if you hear of good projects drop us a line.
There is also some great information on our website: go to www.habodror.org.uk then go to chinuch, and then hit social action. Oh and this would be a great time to recycle your mobile phone, you get to kill two birds with one stone!!
To view the replies we have had for Day 23 click here. Day 24 - Make FoodA very good morning to all of you Thanks for the feedback from you all yesterday, we are glad that you are finding the e-mails so inspiring and you are enjoying the scheme. The social action message board is really hotting up and there is a lively debate about organ donation. Check it out at www.habodror.org.uk click message boards and then go to the social action section. Remember to keep your mobile phones coming into us, we are running this scheme for a long time and are not just stopping because we are on Blue Peter!! E-mail us for addresses to send the phones into or you can always pop in to say hello. We hope you have a lovely day The Habonim Dror Movement Workers Day 24 - Make foodThis will take 5 minutes off your life, but someone will remember it for a long time to come. Make food, cake, sandwich, whatever and give it to a homeless person. This is better than giving money and is a much more personal gesture. If you have more time and money take a homeless person to a café and have a chat with them. It is a really valuable experience. Quick tips: make sure they are homeless and not just with big hair and a beard like some people we know and if you are younger than 16, go with a parent. E-mail any interesting experiences Action Adapted from "change the world for a fiver"
To view the replies we have had for Day 24 click here. Day 25 - Give Money to Local BusinessesHappy Friday Everyone!! Again a big shout out to all for the feedback received in the last few days it is so nice to hear you are all liking the scheme. Please keep the feedback coming for the last 5 days. Remember to check our website and check out the message boards, go to www.habodror.org.uk We have had a few people feedback some interesting things about recycling and yes you can recycle computers and old specs! Just type a search into a search engine to find a company you would like to do it with. We have also had a request about Habo and what we are doing so here goes: 26 shanties, over 100 at weekly meetings, 52 and counting on winter camp, we had culturally Jewish Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur at the ken and have recognised every other festival in a culturally Jewish way, 12 returning shanties (10 or whom have made a kvutsah), three people possibly making aliya in the summer, active in social action around UK, weekly chinuch e-mails (e-mail if you would like to receive them). Have a lovely Shabbat The Habonim Dror Movement Workers xxx
Day 25 - Give money to local businessesWhen you are next shopping don't go to a big supermarket, or when you are going out don't eat at a chain restaurant. Firstly you will keep money in your local area and secondly you will get a friendlier more personal greeting as they really appreciate you as a customer. We would also suggest that when you cannot buy fair-trade goods you look to buy local produce for the same reasons. Again these may cost a little more, but are usually of a higher standard and you are safe in the knowledge that you are not just using large corporations. To view the replies we have had for Day 25 click here. Day 26 - Reduce LitterDay 26 - Reduce Litter Ok this is an old Habo trick but there is no reason that this will not work. Today whenever you are walking e.g. work/school/house to car, bus, train, plane etc pick up just three pieces of litter you see in the street. I think this is a great way to clean up the streets and will take no more than 10 seconds. Enjoy One of today's tasks was adapted from "Change the world for a fiver"
To view the replies we have had for Day 26 click here. Day 27 - Turn Off Unecessary LightsHappy Sunday evening all
Thanks for your continued support and feedback, it is reassuring that this project is inspirational for all of us. For the last few days lets really make a huge effort and really make this month special. Please visit our website and social action message board at ww.habodror.org.uk
Remember to see us live at 5 on Blue Peter tomorrow for our mobile phone recycling project. Keep them coming as we are still collecting mobile phones for more time to come.
We hope you had a good weekend
The Habonim Dror Movement Workers
p.s. We are really sorry, but due to computer difficulties we have had to run off an old mailing list, we apologise if you receive this e-mail if you shouldn’t have
Day 27 – Turn Off Unnecessary Lights
When you leave the room turn the light off, you will not only save money, you will save energy. Lights are said to be a nice feature, let’s make lights the new ivory and fur.
Action from change the world for a fiver
To view the replies we have had for Day 27 click here. Day 28 - Double SidingHello everyone Welcome to the next instalment of the Habonim Dror social action e-mail. With only three days left of social action month we are asking for a final push to really make a difference this month. The organ donation discussion on the social action message board is heating up so give us a visit at www.habodror.org.uk. We would like to thank everybody that has taken part in our mobile phone recycling scheme and to remind everyone that we are continuing the scheme throughout the year. It is very exciting that our work is being recognised throughout the UK so much so that we are on national television. Thank you for making this happen. We hope you all have a great day and we look forward to hearing your responses. Lots of Love The Habonim Dror Movement Workers
Day 28 - Double siding Today's task is really simple: write, print or photocopy on both sides of the paper. Printing; Go to File, print then where it says all pages in range print all
the odd sides, then put the paper back in and do the same with the even
sides, thus double siding. This will half the amount of paper we use meaning we save more trees. How would you like it if someone ripped out your tree that you planted?
To view the replies we have had for Day 28 click here. Day 29 - Call a FriendHello Everyone We hope you all enjoyed Habonim Dror on Blue Peter last night. For those of you that didn't know why we were on it we managed to collect over 100 phones for recycling. We are all delighted and we had a great time too!! Hopefully we will have the pictures on our website soon and the footage if we are allowed. Visit www.habodror.org.uk and have fun. Just a reminder that London Ken is back with a vengeance with over ten people coming weekly. This is massive news for Habo so if you know anyone that is aged 9-12 then let them know. We have weekly meetings on Sunday's at 523 Finchley Rd @ 5pm. Thanks for the continued support that comes our way, please drop us a line in the next couple of days about social action month. Have Great Fun The Habonim Dror Movement Workers
Day 29 - Call a Friend This is a really nice action as it allows us to speak to a person that we have been meaning to speak to for ages and been putting it off because we have no time or think it will be hard to speak after such a long time of not speaking. Today call that person you have been meaning to call for a long time and enjoy!
To view the replies we have had for Day 29 click here. Day 30 - The Last DayWell well well So here we are then, we thought it would be fitting that we send out the last social e-mail in the last remaining minutes of social action month. We started with an idea that accelerated into one of the most exciting social action projects Habonim Dror has ever undertaken. We have reminded and inspired people to do many great things . This includes sending people out in force to the blood donation centre, recycling and giving money to local businesses. For us this has been a memorable acheivement, we have inspired and been inspired everyday. It has been a really rewarding project to run as the feedback and the number of people doing great things has been overwhelming. We would like to say a huge hayach haydad (well done) to every single person that took part in this project, without you there is no sucess story. We hope you do not forget about Habo from here on in. We have more great projects in the pipeline, we have more and more programmes being run for children all over the country, we have weekly shabbat e-mails (let us know if you would like added to the list), we are running more social action projects in towns all over Britain. Check in occassionally at the website which we update everyday www.habodror.org.uk. You can feel free to drop us a line an anytime for chats, suggestions or whatever. We would like to thank our inspiraration for this project "Change the world for a fiver". The book is fantastic and is a constant reminder to us all that we can do great things. Thank you so so much for making this a special month for us all, Lots of Love The Habonim Dror Movement Workers Day 30 - Make sure this is not the end We sat down and wanted to figure out how to end this project effectively and rather than give you one task we are setting down a challange: DO NOT STOP HERE Please continue to carry on the great actions you have been doing throughout the year
To view the replies we have had for Day 30 click here. Change the World for a FiverWe would like to thank the publishers of the book 'Change the World for a Fiver: We are what we do' for allowing us to use a few of their ideas. This book is full of more ideas similar to what we have written above, and only costs a fiver (£5)!!!
