Israel Tour 2006:- Wednesday July 19th/Day 8

EVENING UPDATE

HD1

Last night HD1 had a co-existence peulah to prepare them for the visit to the druze village today.  They split up into little groups, and were given different groups of people; beduins, druze, Christians etc.  They then split up to form multi-cultural groups and had to form a new flag, new national anthem etc.  This was an extremely effective peulah and I heard that everyone got extremely involved.

Last night they stayed on Nachsholim – which they are still in shock about how nice it is.  Apparently there are hammocks all over the place, and nice big luxurious rooms.

This morning they had a ‘fat breakfast’, which went along nicely with the theme of them all feeling spoilt by where they are staying, before having a walk along Dor Beach.  Here they made necklaces out of tortoise shells and had a chance to go swimming in the sea / play uno on the beach.

Afterwards they visited a little druze village called “Dalyet el Carmel”.  This was thoroughly worthwhile, where they got a tour around and had a chance to ask questions – which they got very involved in.

After this they had the infamous druze lunch – this is a huge round tray with lots of different types of food on it shared between about 5 people.  There is so much tasty food that everyone loves it.  This was followed by a Question and Answer session by Druze people of the same age as them.

They then had a tiyul which the madrichim created an Alice in Wonderland theme.  As weird as it sounds apparently it was a hit end enjoyed by all.

They have just had dinner with ‘fat’ deserts at the same kibbutz, and are about to go have some chilling time on the beach.

HD2

Last night we left them at a Rave disco, which they absolutely loved, and had a blast of a time showing off their moves.

This morning they went to the Habo house in Hadera.  This is an irbutz – a modern day kibbutz.  The whole kvutsa (group) are from Habonim from around the world (not Israel).  Here they got a chance to speak to the group about their personal experiences and for the group to ask questions – everyone was highly inspired, but don’t worry, no one wants to make socialist aaliyah (yet!).

After this, like HD1, they went to druze hospitality. This was thoroughly worthwhile, where they got a tour around and had a chance to ask questions – which they got very involved in.

After this they had the infamous druze lunch – this is a huge round tray with lots of different types of food on it shared between about 5 people.  There is so much tasty food that everyone loves.  This was followed by a Question and Answer session by Druze people of the same age as them.

After this unfortunately a water hike had to be cancelled due to nature issues (not security), but they all appreciated being able to go back to the hotel early for a bit of rest and relaxing time.  They are currently staying at a hotel called Chof Dor, which has funky rooms shaped like igloos – they are really happy here as the rooms are so close together, and it is a pleasant place.

After dinner they had a peulah on Zionism, which was followed by another ‘family session’ where they feedback.  All in all HD2 are really happy, forming some really close friendships with each other and having a blast of a time…

Weather;  34 degrees c  (London was hotter than Israel was today, and Manchester was just 2 degree c colder at 32 degrees c – so you don’t have to be too jealous of them!)

Report about Yom Habonim Day by Habonim Dror Olami (world Habonim);

Habonim Dror's biggest ever Yom Habonim took place yesterday on July 16th, at Michmoret Beach, just north of Netanya. The almost 500 participants included those on the high school programs from Canada, USA, England and South Africa, as well as Shnat participants  from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina, and Tnuat Bogrim olim living in Israel.

Yom Habonim gives our chanichim from around the world the chance to meet each other and understand that they have counterparts from across the globe who have similar experiences as they do. The chanichim develop the feeling and understanding that, as members of Habonim Dror, they are a part of a much larger and very exciting institution that is active in our educational and Jewish ideals worldwide. Plus, it is the perfect opportunity for the long-awaited T-shirt exchange!

The interaction between the groups from the different countries this year was excellent. The day started with a moving speech by our maskir, Silvio Joskowicz. He explained that although the situation in the country is less than ideal, we will continue on our path of education and social justice in Israel and that our celebration of the movement should not be altered because of the situation. This sentiment was greeted with cheers and applause as we entered into a beach day of fun and relaxation in celebration of Habonim Dror around the world. The older Shnat participants ran games and small "getting to know you" groups and then the day developed into a relaxed day of mingling, lounging in the sand, and beach games.

The highlight of the day was probably the special Yom Habonim T-shirt and sheshbesh (backgammon) board with the Habonim Dror semel (logo). Each participant got one of each as a keepsake from a very successful and memorable Yom Habonim 2006. Photos of the day will soon be online at : www.habonimdror.org.il

Chinuch;

 The city of Carmel:

This is the biggest Druze town in Israel. The Druze is a special religion, a very secret one that we non-Druze are not allowed to know anything about. It was formed in Egypt approximately a thousand years ago, but kept as a secret because of the banning of it. The druze in Israel have become since the war of independence very good allays, even though some of them have many relatives across the border in Syria.
