HD1 & HD2
This morning both groups headed straight to the Palmach Museum. The Palmach was the regular fighting force of the Haganah (the underground army of Jewish settlers during the British mandate in Palestine). The Palmach contributed significantly to Israeli culture and ethos. Its members formed the backbone of the Israeli Defence Forces high command for many years, and were prominent in Israeli politics, literature and culture.
Significant leaders of the Palmach include Moshe Dayan, Itzhak Sadeh, Yigal Allon and Yitzchak Rabin. This museum is a virtual tour of pre-state defense and the establishment of the State of Israel. Using movies, scenery, sound, light and a poignant story, it follows a group of young partisans through their induction to the Palmach to the establishment of the State of Israel.
After their visit to the Palmach museum, the group progressed in Zionist History to the Independence Hall Museum. This is where David Ben-Gurion declared independence on May 14th 1948 and the State of Israel came into existence.
After this interesting morning, the groups separated and HD1 headed to Tel Aviv beach for a swim and HD2 headed to Kikar Rabin, formerly Kings of Israel Square, where Yitzchak Rabin was assassinated in November 1995. Here they learnt about this other great Zionist Leader and did a tekes (ceremony) to commemorate his life.
The groups then headed back to their hotels where they prepared for their final Shabbat together on Machaneh Yisrael 2005.
