Israel Tour 2005:- Wednesday July 27th/Day 16

Valley of the Communities:

"Tour! Tour! Tour!":

HD1

Today HD1 headed off early to Yad Vashem where their madrichim guided them around the site. They heard many stories of righteous gentiles and bravery and furthered their holocaust education from Sayarim last year. As well as the interior display which is excellent, a main feature of Yad Vashem are its outdoor displays, there is a valley of the communities which has all the names of the villages and towns in Europe where Jews were deported from, a childrens memorial which has a recording of all the names of the children who died in the Shoah (as you walk through you hear their names and all you can see is candles burning), a train cart used to transport people to the concentration camps is suspended up high on a train track which can be interpreted in several ways which the group will discuss.

The trees around the museum all have a name attributed to them – notably the righteous gentiles who helped hide/ protect Jewish people in times of need (e.g. Oscar Schindler) and more – the group will learn about the Shoah and discuss the challenging subject of the Shoah and the relationship with Israel. After the visit, the group did a short tiyul called Sataf, just outside Jerusalem, to give them time to gather their thoughts. Their madrichim then did a short peulah about how to ensure that genocides will not happen again. After their heavy day, the group had free time to relax in the Malcha mall in Jerusalem.

HD2

HD2 spent the day learning about the history of Jerusalem. They started the day with an introduction to the City from the Tayelet Haas, a promenade overlooking the city. They then moved into the Old City where they learnt about the city walls and the other parts of the Jewish Quarter of the Old City, before moving on towards the Kotel, Western Wall, and into the Kotel tunnels, underground passages that follow the course of the ancient Kotel walls. They then visited the Southern Walls excavations and learnt about life at the time of the Kotel. After their busy day, the group headed back to the Shalom Hotel to have a rest.
