Israel Tour 2005:- Monday July 25th/Day 14

HD1 - "Bunch of Lemons":

Beit Guvrin Caves:

"Houmous...mmmmm!":

HD1 & HD2

Today the groups separated again after having a long weekend together.

HD1

HD1are travelling down to Luzit caves where Bar Kochba started his rebellion against the Romans. They then travelled into Jerusalem and, continuing the theme of co-existence, visited the Beit Turgeman museum. This museum looks at co-existence in Jerusalem and is situated on the pre-1967 border. Finally, after an exhausting time paintballing, the group travelled to their youth hostel, Bait Vegan, and settled in for their long stay while they are in Jerusalem.

HD2

HD2 travelled to Beit Guvrin, an archaeological dig site. Here they went into unexcavated caves and helped to dig. The group then went on a short bicycle ride before heading to their hostel in Jerusalem, the Shalom Hotel. After dinner, they had a holocaust survivor come to tell them their story to prepare them for their visit to Yad Vashem in the morning.

Did you know?

After its independence in 1948, and in accordance with the concept of the 'ingathering of the exiles' which lies at the heart of Israel's raison d'etre, the gates of the country were thrown open, affirming the right of every Jew to come to the country and, upon entry, to acquire citizenship. In the first four months of independence, some 50,000 newcomers, mainly Holocaust survivors, reached Israel's shores. By the end of 1951, a total of 687,000 men, women and children had arrived, over 300,000 of them refugees from Arab lands, thus doubling the Jewish population!
