Ken Update
Manchester
Manchester kenim have bounced back in style in 2008. October 12th saw our kenim launch in North and South Manchester with over 50 chanichim attending the first meeting, along with 30+madrichim. The madrichim consisted of Muchanim (Upper sixth) and newly recruited Lomdim fresh from their 4 week tour of Israel in the summer.
New roshim this year are Katie Brackup (South Man) and Oli Sacks (North Man). Numbers have been steady since the launch with an average of 35 chanichim in North Man where the ken takes place @ the Maccabi Centre, Prestwich. Leeds has also seen a good start @ The Zone where Marlon Ellis now roshes Leeds ken along with a committed bunch of Leeds lomdim and muchanim.
As Habo tradition dictates, the first couple of ken meetings saw big fun introductory sessions with lots of ruach, games, fress and frolics. The tochnit (educational theme) for this year is centred on Israel (of course!) and will be covering such things like the make-up of Israeli society and the famous sights in the country.
New Northern Fieldworker, Marc Fink, spoke about the successful ken launch; “ It’s a wonderful start to the year. Our weekly activities are central to all that we do and it is so important we keep them going. Getting young Jewish children to engage in informal Jewish learning, mixing with other Jews and having great fun at the same time, is what it is all about for me.” Marc hopes the success will continue, “ I really sense there is a revival of good old-fashioned fun. Parents are concerned about the effect of modern games consoles and online software on their child’s social skills. It’s time to get kids off their Playstations and get them coming to something much more worthwile.”
